Public Access Records

If you're looking for public access records, I strongly recommend that you read this entire article.  What I'm going to be covering, is what public records are, why you would be interested in using them, and what the most effective method of searching them is.

Public access records records which are in the public domain.  This means that they are usable by anybody who has a legitimate legal reason to look at them.  This is completely different from secret records which are kept by the government and can only be seen by government employees with the correct security clearance.

These public records are made available by the Freedom of Information Act, which requires that records concerning people, companies and other organisations are available to the general public, with some restrictions (usually for records which seriously invade a person's privacy).

There is a vast amount of data available in the public access records, which is why so many people want to look at them.  They provide information relating to a person's complete biographical background, so they are often used by people researching their family trees for others who are doing historical research.

Another use is to use this information to track people down, such as old friends you've lost track with or long lost family members.  Often these records are used by private detectives and other people who make a living out of tracking down missing people.

Public access records are held by many different organisations, so manually going through them requires you visit lots of different locations and spends a vast number of hours searching through records in order to be sure that you have done for research.

Obviously this is more work than most people willing to put in, which is why there are now websites which allow you to search through all of this information using a simple interface.  Using a powerful computer databases, the search is done many thousands of times faster than you could do it yourself.
